Brain dumps

Fancybox 3

For a while now just over half of the visitors to mcaleavy.org have been coming from mobile devices and the image lightbox I was using, Fancybox, wasn’t really mobile friendly. It pops up a little window, and you really don’t want a little window on a teeny, tiny screen. Not great on a photography website.

Nothing else was suitable, and then Fancybox 3 turned up. But nobody had written a WordPress plugin for it. So I sharpened my pencil.

Lots of swearing and wrestling with JQuery and RegEx later and it works. It took 14 lines of code. They just took some finding.

WordPress Albatross

Today’s discovery. If you’ve had WordPress installed and running your website for more years that you care to think about, and have been through a lot of different plugins and themes over the years, your database is probably full of crap. Read more ›

Mac Drive Failure

DaveBootProblems with backup strategies.

On Thursday the hard drive on my Macbook Pro failed. Not a problem. I run Time Machine regularly so I have a full incremental backup that’ll restore my machine back to working condition. Just need to buy a new drive, install it and boot the machine into Recovery mode to start the restore.

Oh… That’s doesn’t work with a blank hard drive. Need to use a boot CD.

Oh… OS X hasn’t come on CD for ages. Try with the last physical disc I have – Snow Leopard. Nope. Doesn’t work.

What the hell do I do now?

Web Hits

Web Hits 03/15Recently this website hit half a million page views. Not a lot by most standards, but it set me to thinking about where those views are coming from. Surprisingly, the answer is basically everywhere. 190 countries.  All of the blue bits on this map. I’ve even had visits from Antarctica.

There are some blanks in West to Central Africa and Central Asia, and nothing from North Korea or Svalbard, but views from everywhere else. From Afghanistan to Zimbabwe.

Watching now to see when those blank spots fill in. Hello World! Hope to see you again soon.
